How rice milling works
A milling line separates unwanted material and progressively removes the husk and bran. Sampling between stages helps distinguish grain-quality problems from equipment-related losses.

Trace one batch through the line
Begin with a defined input batch. Record its weight, variety, condition and moisture measurement. Keeping these observations together makes later comparisons meaningful.

Separate before whitening
Husking does not necessarily remove every husk on the first pass. A paddy separator directs unhusked grain back for another husking pass while brown rice continues toward whitening.
Finish and grade for the intended market
Whitening and polishing address different parts of the finishing task. Grading sorts the finished rice into size fractions. Neither a finishing machine nor a grader repairs kernels that have already broken.
Make a simple stage record
| Sample point | Useful observation |
|---|---|
| Incoming paddy | Moisture reading, visible impurities, batch identity |
| After husking | Remaining paddy and newly broken grain |
| After whitening | Appearance, temperature trend and broken fraction |
| Finished output | Head rice, broken rice and total mass |
Investigate a change systematically
Compare the same batch at adjacent points. When a symptom first appears between two points, inspect that stage and its upstream feed. If the symptom is already present at the inlet, investigate the batch before assuming a machine fault.
What this flow cannot tell you
An idealized diagram does not specify motor size, throughput or roller clearance. Those values require the exact equipment documentation and a defined test condition.
