From paddy to white rice

The route depends on the incoming grain and the required finished product. Husking and whitening are separate transformations; separation between them prevents unhusked paddy from entering the whitener.

The rice husking process
Husking removes the outer husk from paddy to produce brown rice. The resulting stream requires separation before brown rice moves on to whitening.

Whitening removes bran from brown rice to produce white rice. Control the result by the required degree of milling and preservation of kernels rather than appearance alone.

Separate foreign material from incoming paddy before it reaches the working stages. Keep a record of the removed material: cleaned-paddy input and as-received input are different bases for reporting recovery.
Destoning
Remove dense impurities that remain mixed with the grain. Identify the grain and reject outlets when checking performance, and inspect the rejected stream for grain carryover using the equipment procedure.
Polishing
Surface finishing follows the required whitening treatment. Check whether the product actually needs this stage and confirm the finishing method with the supplier; names such as polishing and whitening are not used consistently in every market.
Grading
Separate finished rice into size fractions. Record the grading method and cut-off so head rice and broken rice figures can be interpreted consistently. Grading separates existing fractions; it does not repair damaged kernels.
Color sorting
Optical sorting separates material according to the configured detection criteria. Define which defects should be rejected and assess both the accepted and rejected streams. Sorting performance is not the same measurement as milling recovery.
Packing
Keep the finished batch identity with the package weight and quality record. Verify weighing and handling requirements for the intended product, and avoid mixing batches before their measurements have been reconciled.
